About

Economic crises, environmental changes, and epidemics are some of the current problems that challenge both our knowledge and our ability to solve them. Our difficulties in recognizing historic patterns and anticipating future consequences are limited by the complexities in the behavior of dynamic systems.
How can we interpret these situations and propose solutions that can lead us to a better life and a better world?

System Dynamics is a methodology focused on the study and understanding of complex systems. It uses computer models to help us understand the impacts of time delays and nonlinearities in systems.

Whether you can contribute or just want to learn more about the subject, the Latin American and Brazil Chapters of the System Dynamics Society invite all those interested to participate in the XIV Latin American Conference on Systems Dynamics (CLADS 2016), which will be from October 19-21, 2016 at the University Center FEI, São Paulo, Brazil.

CLADS 2016 is intended to:

  • Encourage professional, scientific, and training activities;
  • Highlight relevant applications;
  • Foster training and learning in System Dynamics;
  • Promote the interchange of ideas and knowledge;
  • Encourage the use System Dynamics in education; and
  • Enrich and strengthen our social network.

3 days

The conference will last three days and include plenary sessions from invited national and international speakers, parallel sessions, poster presentations, and workshops.

The presentations will be in English, Spanish, or Portuguese. The workshops will be in English.

Speakers

Kim Warren, Strategy Dynamics e WPI, UK.

Kim is an experienced strategy professional, teacher and writer. His work now focuses entirely on the practical, rigorous method known as Strategy Dynamics which he developed to help businesses and other organisations of any kind or size radically improve their planning and implementation of strategy.
He is author of the prize-winning "Competitive Strategy Dynamics," the major strategy textbook "Strategic Management Dynamics", and an e-book "Strategy Dynamics Essentials". Kim is also the founder of Strategy Dynamics, Ltd., makers of Sysdea software. Kim has an engineering background, an MBA and PhD from the London Business School.

Important

Just after CLADS, Kim Warren is offering the "Strategy and Business Dynamics Workshop", October 21 and 22.

Hazhir Rahmandad, MIT, EUA.

Hazhir's research applies dynamic modeling to complex organizational problems. He has analyzed how organizations learn in the presence of delays between taking action and observing the results, and has shown through empirical data and simulations the resulting learning challenges. Hazhir's strategy research has explored capability development tradeoffs under competition and erosion of organizational capabilities through adaptation traps. In another stream of work he has studied public health problems, including obesity dynamics and comparing different modeling methodologies in application to epidemics, among others. Hazhir also contributes to expanding the dynamic modeling toolbox through advancing parameter estimation and validation methods for dynamic models.

Etiënne Rouwette (current president of the System Dynamics Society) Radbout University, Netherlands.

Etiënne Rouwette holds a position as associate professor at the Methodology Department of the Nijmegen School of Management (Radboud University Nijmegen, The Netherlands). He lectures on empirical research methods and group decision support methods such as facilitated modeling, multiple scenario development, Electronic Meeting Systems, gaming simulation in bachelor, master and post doctorate modules at Radboud University and Warwick Business School. His research focuses on group decision making and the impact of decision support methods on interaction, cognition and behavior. Etiënne is the coordinator of the faculty’s decision rooms: the Decision lab and VISA skills lab. He currently supervises Ph.D. researchers involved in modeling health care, housing and energy issues, information exchange in groups and the impact of modeling on cognition. Etiënne is the current president of the System Dynamics Society.

Karim Chichakly, Isee Systems e WPI, EUA.

Karim Chichakly is the co-president of isee systems, inc., the makers of both STELLA® and iThink® systems thinking software. He has completed systems thinking modeling projects in business strategy, project management, health care, public policy, and the environment. Karim is Adjunct Professor of System Dynamics at Worcester Polytechnic Institute and Adjunct Professor of Computer Science at Capitol Technical University. He holds degrees in mathematics, engineering, computer science, and system dynamics. Karim developed the draft XMILE standard for interchanging and archiving System Dynamics models, which was recently approved as an OASIS standard.
